The Fire Organ visualizes sound with fire using 19th century technology called a Rubens’ tube. The hollow metal tube has holes at the top, and a speaker on the end. When propane gas flowing through the tube is ignited, flames rise out of the top. Standing waves form in the tube based on the frequency of the sound from the speaker, which modulates the pressure within the tube. Guerilla Science created the Fire Organ in 2015 and I’ve brought it to Maker Faire on the East and West coast, and two performance venues in Brooklyn.
